Which are the Most Popular Bariatric Procedures?

Everyone is different and so are their bodies. These are the most popular surgeries, but get your case evaluated from your surgeon to find the best procedure for you.

Sleeve Gastrectomy or Gastric Sleeve Surgery (VSG)

Gastric sleeve requires removal of a larger portion of the stomach. The remaining stomach is called the sleeve.

The sleeve is about one-fourth the size of the original stomach and looks like a tube or a banana.

Gastric sleeve patients feel fuller faster and tend to lose weight rapidly. It is a minimally invasive procedure. This surgery is being preferred as it does not involve inserting a foreign object into the body, as is the case in the lap band procedure.

We offer the gastric sleeve surgery in Tijuana, Cancun, and Mexicali.

A patient is a candidate for bariatric surgery when his BMI is 35 or more. Sometimes, when the patient has a lower BMI but has co-morbidities like diabetes or high blood pressure, sleep apnea or reflux, we do perform such a procedure even if the patient has a lower BMI. Gastric Bypass or Roux en Y

This weight-loss surgical procedure helps one lose weight by reducing the size of the stomach. This is done by altering the way food is handled by the small intestine. A small pouch, about 10% of the stomach, is attached directly to the small intestine.

With the help of this procedure, the food is rerouted to the small intestine without it going through the bottom of the stomach. As the intestine is rerouted as well, the digestion begins in the intestine.

The major side effect of gastric bypass surgery is the malabsorption of nutrients. This is why it becomes essential to be regular with nutritional supplements. Some other risks with gastric bypass are fatigue, anemia, and abdominal pain.
